Cherry Kitchen Cabinets

It's official, cherry kitchen cabinets are coming back into fashion as a timeless, but yet contemporary option to oak. So why are more people turning to cherry wood?

Well a lot of it has to do with the type of wood that it is. Cherry wood is grown all over the world and in terms of color, the wood in each region can differ considerably. For example, it can range from a beautiful rich red hue, all the way through to a deep mahogany brown, as well as all the spectrum of colors in between. So in terms of versatility it gives the customer a lot of choice.

In terms of durability, it is classed as a medium to hard wood and maintains a tough outer shell so it is not going to warp or buckle when it is introduced to steam and water splashes, It's softer on the inside, so it is relatively easy to carve. This makes it ideal for making the shaker style type of kitchen cabinetry, (plain and sleek) as well as the more ornate kitchens, so it is flexible also. Unlike other hard woods it has a subtle grain, and is very tactile to the touch with a satin like quality and a smooth textured finish.

When it comes to cost, cherry kitchen cabinets can be classified as a mid to high end price range. However, along with the price tag comes, quality, versatility, durability and style, so I guess you have to weigh up whether you want to add value to your house or apartment, because adding a good quality, long lasting kitchen will certainly do that. One word of warning! If you are going to spend money on cherry kitchen cabinets in order to add value to your house, make sure you do the research first. You do not need to spend upwards of $15,000-$20,000 on your new kitchen, you can get it at 1/4 of the cost, and buy new appliances with the money you saved!

As with all woods there are some precautions that you need to consider. Firstly cherry wood can be receptive to light which means over a period of time, strong light will slightly fade the wood. You may want to think about positioning cabinets out of strong light or maybe introduce some form of ambient lighting in your kitchen. It is an unfortunate fact of life that things will succumb to “fair wear and tear” and your cherry kitchen cabinets are no exception. If you do have broken or scratched cabinet doors and drawers then at some point, you might need to think about changing them. However with the rest of your cherry wood kitchen already aged, matching replacements can prove difficult. Having said this, there are people who specialize in tinting wood, so that it matches exactly with the rest of your cabinets. So you just need to shop around.

Cherry wood kitchen cabinets are a timeless style icon that is versatile, long lasting and sustainable. They are certainly not the cheapest cabinets on the market, but if you are looking at a long term investment (and an alternative to good old oak kitchen cabinets) not a quick fix solution, then you really should consider cherry wood as a very plausible option.
