If you are planning to remodel your kitchen or if you are starting from scratch it is important to learn everything you can about the product you are looking to invest in.  You want to be sure that what you put in your kitchen will last, be durable and be aesthetically pleasing.

Most kitchen cabinets are made of a variety of materials depending on how much they cost.  Most will consist of particle board, plywood, solid wood and medium density fiberboard (MDF).  Particle board tends to be the main ingredient to kitchen cabinets with the lower price tag.  Particle board is made up of wood shavings, sawdust and other wood products that are pressure glued together. Plywood is made up of layers of wood plies on top of each other which provide good strength in all directions because it is the same material layered on top of each other.  Medium density fiberboard is a material made of finer components then particle board but unlike particle board can be molded and shaped because it is smoother and its surface can be painted or stained.

When looking for good quality cabinets try to stick to plywood.  Many people get the misconception that solid wood is the best quality cabinet—when in fact that is not true.  Solid wood cabinets tend to absorb moisture, becomes unstable and can then shrink and swell depending on the humidity. Make sure that when you are doing your research you ask what the cabinet is made of, if they tell you solid wood they are usually referring to plywood with wood veneers so make sure to verify.  Solid plywood is ideally what you want to be looking for without and particle board, MDF, or veneers. Veneers can be used over solid wood door and drawer fronts which are usually for aesthetic purposes and will not affect the actual durability or quality of the cabinet. The cabinet sides, back, top, bottom, drawer boxes and shelves are the main ingredients of a kitchen cabinet. In a quality made kitchen cabinet, those components would ideally be constructed of plywood.

The most important thing about renovating, remodeling or installing new kitchen cabinets is to be as well informed as you can.  Do the research before you shop so you can be an informed customer who purchases a good quality product.

Hello All,

My name is Tyler and I work for The RTA Store. For those of you who do not know, "RTA" stands for Ready to Assemble. The RTA Store sells RTA Kitchen Cabinets, RTA Dining Room Furniture, and RTA Living Room Tables (we are constantly looking for additional high quality RTA manufacturers to add).

For my first post I thought I would let you know my thoughts on RTA kitchen cabinets; from high quality to mid-grade to low quality.

I do not consider myself to be an absolute expert on RTA kitchen cabinets but from what I do know there is definietly a distinct difference between high quality and low quality RTA cabinets. Now a days, all RTA kitchen cabinets should come with easy installation directions, all pre-drilled, and really the only tool you should need is a screwdriver (for CAM lock systems*). If you are looking at RTA cabinets that do not have those features than you are wasting your time (in my opinion). People who buy RTA kitchen cabinets know that they will have to do work to assemble the product and should be looking for high quality easy to assemble kitchen cabinets.

Construction of ready to assemble kitchen cabinets should be the most important thing to consider when purchasing your new kitchen. For starters, do not ever buy anything that has particle board or 'fake' wood in its construction, you are asking for a problem if you do. Particle board is constructed of wood chips, saw dust, and other wood particles and is less dense. It can mold, warp, break, and is a huge no-no when considering what RTA cabinets to purchase. Solid wood cabinets are your best bet. Now, if you want complete solid wood cabinets you may have to get them custom built and as far as I know they are not available as RTA. You should be looking to purchase 100% solid wood fronts and sides (door frames) with plywood backs and bottoms. The thicker the plywood, the better. A good thickness is about 1/2" for both.

RTA kitchen cabinets are becoming more and more popular everyday, as consumers become more cost effective and realize they can get the same quality kitchen cabinets for a fraction of the cost.

*CAM lock systems - consist of a base and a cam that latch together. Basically, you put the two pieces of the cabinet together and screw the cam with a simple turn and it latches the cabinet together. A CAM lock system is one of the most sturdy assembly systems you can buy.
